University of Chicago Dean-on-Call Program
The Dean-on-Call Program features two distinct entities, the Dean-on-Call and the Sexual Assault Dean-on-Call.
Both Deans are available 24 hours a day, every day of the calendar year. They can be reached by calling the University Police (at 123 or 702-8181) or the Student Emergency Assistance Line (834-HELP, or 834-4357).
Dean-on-Call
- Responsible for ensuring that the full resources of the University are available to and working for the student.
- Coordinates the University's response to student emergencies.
- Provides information, explains procedures of the police station or hospital emergency room, or may (in consultation with the student) notify the student's resident head, area dean of students, friends, or family about the situation.
- Will be contacted by the University Police when a serious incident involving a student happens.
- Will be notified by the Mitchell Hospital Emergency Room when a patient enters the Emergency Room for treatment and identifies himself or herself as a student.
- Monitors a student's case to make sure that adequate support continues to be made available after the crisis has passed.
Sexual Assault Dean-on-Call
- Specifically trained as Sexual Assault Survivor Advocates through the Rape Victim Advocates program to assist and support a student who has been sexually assaulted.
- Will not disclose the student's identity to the public, other students, faculty, staff, etc., unless the student gives permission to do so.
- Will contact the student and, if appropriate, will go to the Mitchell Hospital Emergency Room to offer assistance. The student may ask the sexual assault dean-on-call to leave and not become involved further, but should recognize that doing so will make it much more difficult for the University to provide coordinated assistance.
- Provides information, explains procedures at the police station or the emergency room, gives general information about the criminal justice system and University disciplinary procedures, and provides referrals for counseling and other services such as legal advocacy.
- Will ensure that the resources of the University are available to assist the student and will work with area deans of students and other University staff to make reasonable efforts to accommodate changes in academic and living arrangements requested by the student.
- Will contact the student in the days following to offer assistance and support; will remain in contact with the student as long as the student wishes.
